Year 11 is the final and busiest year of the GCSE journey. Alongside mock exams, past papers and the real exams in May–June, applications for sixth form, college or apprenticeships also happen during the same year. In other words, it's a year of both preparing for exams and deciding what comes after 16.

We put this guide together from years of experience advising families and students in England. It covers what to do month by month, post-16 options, the application timeline, preparing a Plan A and Plan B with Unifrog, book suggestions and an exam-day checklist.

Alongside the guide, we've also prepared some study and tracking files that are easy to use at home. You can download them all free at the bottom of this page.

Year 11 Family Guide (PDF): the main guide summarising the whole year. We recommend reading this before starting on the other files.

Year 11 Study and Tracking Pack (Word): a pack with a weekly study plan, plus plans for the mock period and study leave. You can fill in the Word version on a computer, or print the PDF version and use it by hand.

GCSE Tracker (Excel): lets you see your child's progress in every subject in one place. It tracks past paper scores, Red/Amber/Green status for each topic, and target grades, so it's easy to see which topics need more work.

GCSE Past Paper List (PDF): lists recent exam papers for each subject by year and by Higher/Foundation tier. Tick off each paper as it's completed to see what's done and what's left.

GCSE Past Paper Checklist (PDF): for those who want to track past paper practice in more detail. For each paper, tick off steps such as completed, marked and gaps revised.

Doing past papers is one of the most effective ways to study in Year 11. But the real benefit comes after the paper: marking it with the mark scheme and going back to the topics that went wrong. These files are designed to help you build that routine.

We update the guide and files regularly based on questions from families. You can share your questions and experiences in the comments section below.
