Year 8 is often called “the forgotten year”. The excitement of Year 7 has passed and GCSEs still feel far away, so some students' motivation dips. Yet Year 8 is the year when the habits started in Year 7 take root, independence grows and interests begin to take shape.
This guide draws on years of seminars and one-to-one guidance with families and students across England. Inside you will find:
- Three goals for Year 8: going deeper, independence, and moving from exploring to choosing
- What universities and employers will look for years from now, and how it connects to today
- Digital life and social media: turning 13, a family digital agreement, and using AI well
- An early look at GCSE options: how to prepare now for the choices made in Year 9 (or Year 8 at some schools)
- Activities outside school to prepare for DofE Bronze (Year 9); Cadets, Scouts and volunteering
- Unifrog, IXL and free learning platforms; home languages and GCSEs in them
- Month-by-month checklist: three small steps each month, a video/podcast, and one English book plus one in your home language
This guide is a living document. It will be updated regularly based on your questions and suggestions.
