What Are Predicted Grades?

(Predicted Grades)

Because applications have to be made before real exam results are out, sixth forms, colleges and universities use predicted grades to decide whether to offer students a place.

How are predicted grades decided?

Predicted grades are the grades teachers expect a student to achieve, based on their academic performance. They take into account:

  • Mock exams and assessments: the student's past test results and overall academic performance.
  • Classwork and homework: regular attendance, homework and the student's overall learning.
  • Teachers' professional judgement: teachers look at the student's progress and potential to make the most realistic prediction.
  • The student's progress over time: progress in earlier years helps predict the grade a student is likely to get in the final exams.

Why do predicted grades matter?

  • They are used in sixth form, college and university applications: many providers base their offers on predicted grades.
  • They can affect scholarships and special programmes: predicted grades play a big part in academic scholarships and some support programmes.
  • They guide students: predicted grades help students see their strengths and weaknesses and plan their study accordingly.
